Initial plans!

So another weekend looms and more rain and wind is on the cards - oh great! Weather permitting, I plan to start sorting out, tidying up etc. the railway shed. The roof needs sealing, it needs cleaning out and tidying up, the ceiling needs painting white to freshen it up, the electrics need checking, a cable needs running out to plug it in, a work becnh/water heater and sink unit needs removing........

Well here is an initital plan of the layout....

It might need downloading to see it clearer!
The main feature is that I want to contour a large part to make it more 3D with hills and mountainous woodland areas and a large section of track at a higher level than the base board. Comments welcome!!

it looks a bit tight to the top right of your work area.
Also, why not pop in a tunnel somewhere?

Really useful comments. Thanks Tony - I had planned a tunnel initially so I'll look at that and may be the canal might be better somewhere else.

Plans are looking great! However I am a little concerned at the size of the work area. Are you sure it is large enough to get your beer belly in! Maybe you will need something like a winding hole to enable you to turn around in!

Right - that's it; I'm going to track this ip address! Only kidding, sadly it's too true but I think I have just about taken that into account in the measurements!! LOL

For your canal building: you can end it anywhere you like by just going into a tunnel. eg the caldon, which emerges from a tunnel into a mooring and then ends.

oh how cool would it be to include an unwatered, derelict, stretch? maybe even an abandoned lock?

As for the rail side...
I still think some of the corners are too tight, and maybe the gradients are execssive too.

Tony.

Love the idea of an unrestored section of canal - that might just have to happen! Thanks. I may be tight on space however as I do want to include a working section with boats/locks etc. and I would need to figure in a winding hole before the abandoned section etc. Lots to think about!!

As for the inclines and curves, they're not set in stone just a rough guide to start with. My experience from previous layouts suggest that the final design will morph considerably during construction! Thanks for all the advice and ideas though.

ha - boaters do have a thing about trains, don't they? In fact the enthusiasm when I mentioned I still had my Mamod steam railway set from youth means that I'll be setting it up at the moorings at Iver soon, for all the us little boys in our forties to play with. The children may get a quick look, who knows... ;-)

I've only got the basic oval of track, although 2/3 mile of linear mooring certainly opens up possibilities... :-)
